Project Progress Update: Community Sheep Farming in Bringinan Village

By Anny Hidayati | Project Staff

Dear Supporters and Donors,

We are pleased to share a progress update on the community-managed goat farming initiative in Bringinan Village, Ponorogo, facilitated by INFEST Foundation. This project is part of our effort to strengthen sustainable livelihoods through community-owned enterprises under BUM-KOPI (community-owned business of KOPI – Komunitas Pekerja Migran Indonesia).

Progress to Date

  • The community currently manages 50 goats as collective assets, after accounting for those sold.
  • In 2025, goat sales generated approximately IDR 35 million in revenue.
  • Livestock is managed through a profit-sharing system, in which animals are entrusted to community caretakers, and returns are calculated annually.
  • Members have begun building internal capital through mandatory savings, supporting long-term sustainability and reducing dependence on external funding.

Community Engagement

The initiative continues to strengthen solidarity and shared responsibility among members. Community ownership of assets has encouraged transparency, collective monitoring, and mutual trust. Members remain actively involved in safeguarding livestock and supporting caretakers.

Challenges Identified

  • Economic benefits are still limited in scale and realized over longer cycles.
  • Income distribution is annual, which may delay short-term benefits for some households.
  • Variations in livestock care quality remain a risk that needs closer supervision.
  • The current business model requires further diversification to increase impact.

Actions and Improvements

  • The community and INFEST Foundation are reviewing and refining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for livestock management.
  • Improved business forecasting is being developed, taking into account goats' productive lifecycles.
  • Exploration of complementary activities such as organic fertilizer production and feed development is underway to increase income streams.

What We Learned

Using a structured reflection process has helped us better understand that success depends not only on revenue but also on governance, monitoring, and community cohesion. Strong social capital has proven to be a critical asset for sustainability.

Next Steps

  • Strengthen livestock monitoring and caretaker accountability.
  • Expand income-generating activities linked to goat farming.
  • Improve financial documentation and transparent reporting.
  • Increase the number of households benefiting from the initiative.

Thank you for your continued support. Your contribution helps ensure that community-led livelihoods in Bringinan grow stronger, more resilient, and more sustainable over time.

With gratitude,

INFEST Foundation Team
