This project ensures the continuity of the only conservatory on Easter Island, offering children and young people the opportunity to combat the lack of opportunities and vulnerability caused by isolation through a comprehensive and high-quality education. The areas of focus include teaching classical instruments and traditional disciplines, environmental education, and the preservation of our culture. The Toki NGO has provided education to more than 1,100 students over its 12 years of existence
Rapa Nui is the most isolated territory in the world, which means a constant lack of opportunities for children and young people, and a continuous exposure to vices and risks of social vulnerability. If their dream cannot be fulfilled on the island, the options are to abandon their land or abandon their dream. Rapa Nui represents a "small planet," where all the social problems visible in the world are concentrated: lack of energy, social risks, and the waste problem, to name a few examples.
We offer comprehensive education to 5% of our target group, which represents a significant number. Our kids and youth receive rigorous musical training in classical disciplines, which would not be possible if our NGO did not exist. A traditional training area is also offered, with the goal of promoting the use of the language, which is at risk of extinction. We carry out actions to raise environmental awareness, including the fact that the school is built with waste and is 100% self-sustaining.
We aim to educate at least 10% of our target group annually, which equals 180 children and young people. We will empower them to be agents of change, ensuring that the major problems in their community and the rest of the world are not indifferent to them. They will preserve their language and traditions, as they will not have had to leave the island at an early age. They will have the values instilled through learning an instrument, such as self-esteem, respect, and tolerance for frustration.
