This project will empower girls from rural Mozambican villages to go to high school, equipping them with the skills and education to rise out of poverty. Specifically, this project will address the particular needs of each student, including financial, logistical, and social support, to ensure that each girl can succeed in her high school studies. This project will target girls who would not be able to go to high school at all without this support.
In Mozambique, more than two-thirds of students drop out of school by the fifth grade. For girl students, the share is even higher, and this often leads to premature marriages and adolescent pregnancies. This prevents girls from gaining the education they need to rise out of poverty. A major challenge is that there are very few high schools in rural areas of Mozambique, so most students have to travel to nearby towns to continue their studies, which is often prohibitively expensive.
This project will provide the financial, logistical, and social support to empower girls from rural villages to go to high school. This will include transportation (a school bus!) and daily lunches. Each girl will have a project mentor, who will meet regularly to support the girl in her studies. This project will target the particular needs of each girl to ensure that she has the means to go to high school, especially those who would have no chance to go to high school without support.
This project will enable girls to go to high school (8th-12th grade), empowering them with the skills and education to rise out of poverty. For girls from rural Mozambique, this is a life-changing opportunity, as less than 10% of girls from these villages have a high school education. Investing in these girls' education will allow them to pursue better jobs and avoid premature marriages and pregnancies.
