Lessons on the school bus!

By Cara Myers | Director of Development and Innovation

Greetings from Mozambique!

In rural Chokwe District, a school bus makes a big difference for girls' education. With the high school far away, walking is often not viable, and could also be unsafe for girls going early in the morning or returning late at night. With our school buses, over 200 girls from rural villages are attending high school. Every day, they have a safe and reliable way to get to school, allowing them to focus on their studies.

As it turns out, the school bus ride also provides an opportunity for learning. For the last several months, students have been listening to the radio program Ouro Negro while on the bus, which is a series of stories created to be entertaining for adolescents, while also discussing key messages around health, women's rights, and self-confidence. Recently, our adolescent mentors have taken this a step further by joining the students on the bus rides in the morning to discuss the messages from the radio program with the students. It's about a 30-minute ride from the villages to the high school, so this provides ample time for the mentors to chat with the students and make use of the collective time on the bus.

For adolescents to succeed in high school in Mozambique, there are a lot of factors at play. The education they receive at the school is important, but so are the life lessons that they develop throughout their adolescence through mentorship and role models. That's why our program includes the school bus as well as the mentorship, to support students in multiple ways during this critical period of their lives.

With your support, we are making a lasting difference for Mozambican girls -- empowering them to go to school and develop the skills they need to succeed. Thank you for being part of our effort!
