Empowering girls with digital skills

By Cara Myers | Director of Development and Innovation

Greetings from Mozambique!

An exciting update to our program this year is the inclusion of digital skills training for the students in the high school mentorship program. The students get the chance to develop their digital skills proficiency through regular use of the Lenovo tablets twice a week, which has been a great complement to their other activities. For many students, using the tablets this quarter has been a new and exciting experience. While some have had exposure to basic cellphones, very few have every used a smartphone or tablet before. While initial sessions had to focus on the basic functionality of a tablet, students have now advanced to using a number of applications. These sessions are always moderated by our mentors, who guide the students in pre-determined activities, and provide support to help students with questions.

Not only are the tablets increasing students' skill sets, they have also boosted even more interest in the program. Our goal is to see students complete high school, and digital skills will make them even more competitive in the job market after graduation. That's why we also focus on practical skills that will be directly relevant for applying for jobs and communicating professionally.

The school bus, mentorship meetings, school lunch, and digital skills training all come together in a package of support that really takes these students to the next level and sets them up for success. Thank you for being part of our work and making it possible for these students to have opportunities for a better future through education!
