Getting ready for the end of the school year

As the school year continues through June, children at Genanaw Kerse Memorial School are coming to class with the basic supplies they need to learn. Having notebooks and writing materials means students can participate fully in lessons, follow along with their teachers, and feel included alongside their peers. These simple tools make a meaningful difference in how children experience school each day.
Teachers share that when students have what they need, classrooms are calmer and routines are easier to maintain. Children are more settled, more confident, and better able to focus on learning rather than worrying about missing supplies. A clean, safe school environment combined with adequate materials helps create a sense of stability that supports learning throughout the year.
Enrollment remains strong, and meeting even basic needs requires careful planning. While our donor community is small, current support has helped sustain learning conditions during this school year. Because of ongoing constraints and growing needs, we are beginning early planning for the next academic year to ensure children can return to school prepared and ready to learn.

A New Beginning for Our Students - But We Can't Stop Now

Finally some desks!
Thanks to your early support, the Genanaw Foundation’s students are finally learning in their first real classrooms — with desks, blackboards, and shelves of fresh notebooks and pencils. For many children, this is the first time they’ve had their own space to learn, their own materials, and the assurance of another year of education ahead. The joy on their faces is undeniable: hope has a home again.
But rising inflation has made even the simplest school supplies harder to afford. Costs for books, paper, and hygiene items have climbed sharply, stretching every donation to its limit. Still, we refuse to slow down. Our commitment to these students remains unbroken — we’re continuing deliveries of materials and essentials so learning can continue without interruption.
We’re close to completing these classrooms, but we still need your help to finish the job and ensure every girl has the supplies and hygiene products she needs. Now is the moment to act. Every gift — no matter the size — helps keep these children learning, thriving, and believing in their future.

Because Learning Can't Wait
By Nancy Carre' | Grants Manager
This past quarter, the Genanaw Foundation began preparing to launch a vital new initiative: printing and distributing textbooks for Genet Miriam School students. Due to the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia, national education funding has been sharply reduced. As a result, many public schools—particularly in rural areas like Gulo—are receiving only a single softcover “exemplar” copy of each textbook, far short of what is needed to support classroom learning.
To address this urgent need, we are initiating a textbook printing project for the upcoming school year. Our goal is to provide enough books so that no more than three students need to share a copy, and each teacher receives one of their own. This will significantly improve learning conditions and reduce the burden on teachers who are currently relying on a single reference copy for entire classes.
While this project is new, it builds on the Foundation’s long-standing commitment to ensuring that students in underserved rural communities have the tools they need to succeed. We’re grateful for your continued support in helping make this possible.
