Rains Return, Futures Grow

It’s late April, and we are on summer break. After a long stretch of heat, haze, and dry days, we were grateful for the first rains. The cooler air has been a welcome relief. Many of the children have returned to their mountain villages, where they can enjoy the change in weather and help their families on the farms.

Even during the break, there is plenty of activity. A and Thiew are interning at the local police station as part of their high school business program, gaining real-world experience. Our two recent high school graduates are working to save money as they prepare for the next step in their education.

We also celebrated Songkran, the traditional New Year in Northern Thailand, a time for renewal, family, and respect. Elders are honored with gentle water blessings and gifts of food. A few of our graduates came by to celebrate with us. Ice shared that she is starting her second year in a business program at Rajamangala University in Chiang Mai. Aop joined her and let us know that, while she is managing some health challenges, she is continuing her university studies online while working nearby in Phrao.

We are especially proud to share that Jiu has graduated from nursing school and will begin work at our local Phrao Hospital.

JJ graduated from Rajabhat University with a degree in computer science and already has a job lined up. Gai has completed a technical college program in marketing and plans to continue toward a four-year degree.

Our two high school seniors, Obcheoi and Tuiy Nuiy, have both been accepted into university, where they will study Business English & Communications and Psychology/Counseling. Four more students have completed Grade 9 and are moving on to high school, entering Math & Science and Language tracks.

And then, in true Warm Heart fashion, Naan arrived on a Friday with an invitation to her wedding that Sunday in her mountain village. She wore a traditional Akha headdress adorned with her silver dowry. Naan will continue her work as a nurse at Sansai Hospital, while her husband runs a family business in Phrao.

Thanks to your generosity, we will have 20 students attending university and 10 in high school this coming year. To date, 69 of our students have graduated from high school, with 70% continuing on to higher education. We now have 28 university and vocational graduates building their lives, continuing their studies, working, and supporting themselves, their families, and their communities.

With gratitude for all that you make possible,

Dana, Michael, Evelind, and the Warm Heart Family
