In Rwanda, the vulnerability of women to HIV infection is associated with barriers they face. These include accessing information about HIV transmission, making decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, accessing testing and treatment services and obtaining the economic and social autonomy to protect them from violence. The risk of being infected with HIV is even higher for women who are victims of domestic violence. Fear limits their decision-making power. Women need to build up their self-esteem. With self-esteem a woman can defend her rights and seek information and help. It is against this background that Human Rights First Rwanda Association trained over 80 women health rights volunteers in Kamonyi between the Month of May and early June 2019 who would provide information to other women on issues of sexual reproductive health including the use of contraceptives, female condoms and health rights in general. It’s clear when a woman has control over her body, she cannot easily be duped to having unprotected sex and thus risk cntracting sexual transmitted diseases or HIV/AIDS.
Through this intervention we have noted through our feedback survey and questionnaires a positive trend of women purchasing condoms at local shops without fear or intimidation.
