Since our last update, our programs across Africa have continued to grow, with a strong focus on local leadership, regional collaboration, and expanding opportunities for students to develop STEM skills. We are particularly encouraged to see our “students into teachers” model creating new opportunities for program alumni to become leaders and bring robotics education to new communities across the continent.
Mozambique:
In Mozambique, classes have continued with our new generation of middle and high school students. This cohort is continuing to build foundational robotics and technical skills, strengthening the program’s long-term sustainability and creating new opportunities for students to progress through the robotics pathway.
Sierra Leone:
In Sierra Leone, classes have continued in collaboration with our local partners at GUIDE. Following the launch of the program and donation of five computers, students are now continuing their robotics learning and gaining hands-on experience with technology. This continued implementation represents an important step in strengthening our presence in West Africa and expanding access to STEM opportunities for students.
Nigeria:
We have also expanded our programs to Nigeria, marking a new step in our efforts to reach students in additional African communities. Classes are being implemented in partnership with Team Career Lifters (T-CaLi), our local partner in Nigeria. The program is being led by two alumni of our Ethiopia program, providing a powerful example of our “students into teachers” model in action. By empowering former students to become instructors and regional leaders, we are creating a sustainable model for expanding STEM learning across Africa.
Ethiopia:
Our Ethiopia program continues to have an impact beyond the students directly participating in the program. Two alumni from the program are now teaching robotics in Nigeria, Mozambique and Sierra Leone, demonstrating how the skills and leadership developed through the program can be carried forward into new communities. We are especially proud to share that one of these alumni has recently been accepted into a STEM program to pursue his undergraduate studies in Boston.
Cameroon:
We are beginning the process of restarting our program in Cameroon. For this new phase, we are exploring an approach focused on younger students in 5th and 6th grade. Adapting the program for elementary-level students will allow us to introduce robotics and technology skills at an earlier age and build a stronger pathway for students to continue developing their STEM skills as they advance through school.
Namibia:
In Namibia, we are preparing to take the next step by organizing a hackathon in September. The event will provide students with an opportunity to apply the technical and problem-solving skills they have developed through the program in a collaborative and hands-on setting. This initiative will further strengthen our focus on practical technology learning and student-led innovation.
