Finding ourselves through the journey with YCM.

By Putu Ariany | Project Leader and Co-Founder of YCM

Deri
Deri

Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom.” –Lao Tzu, the quote reminds me of a young man who came to YCM without knowing the purpose of life at the beginning and motivated to be a better one. The young man’s name is Deri. He grew up without a father figure who passed away since he was in elementary. His mother hardly to communicate with him and he tried to figure out his life since then. He struggled a lot in his elementary and high school years, without knowing direction and negative environment could easily manipulated his acts. He often played hooky from school, stole others’ belonging, cheated, fought with his friends and many other mischievousness. When he was fifteen, he decided not to continue his study, instead he chose to become an angkot’s driver (angkot is a public transport in our city).  He missed the direction of life, until one day a friend asked him to join Yayasan Cipta Mandiri (YCM). He felt something different happened within himself, an urgency of finding himself as the environment and the role models of YCM gave him some insight to be a better one in order to have a better life in the future. One thing I remember about young Deri is he came by himself and told me that he wanted to continue his high school and always asked me about his future life.

Deri started to learn English and other knowledge eagerly. He started to have a dream and managed to proof us that he deserved to get the assistance to continue his study to university after his package school (equivalent to his high school certificate). Deri has proved us that he was able to change himself to be a better person since he knew what he wanted to achieve in his life. Deri told me that it was a surprise for his mother to find out his improvement and Deri’s eagerness to continue his study. His mother was touched and teary when she found out how different Deri was and after he joining YCM.

After he finished his study in a university majoring in English education, Deri who is now married to a woman who was also joining YCM named Etika decided to open a wedding organizer business beside working in a pharmacy company and his multitalented skill allows him to do and get beyond his expectation.

Deri and Etika met at YCM, struggled their young age and decided to build a family together. One thing in common among them is their goal to have their own business. Etika’s passion on make up artist allows her to use her passion and talent through wedding’s make up.

Deri and Etika are now having a four-year-old son and expecting another one soon. I visited their business base slash their home not so long ago and I witnessed their success on reaching their goals. They named their business from the abbreviation of their names Deri and Etika. They told me, owning a business does not mean that they did not face any challenges, they did and they learned from those.

Both of them told me, how grateful they are that they were joining YCM. They learned a lot and have found a second home for them. Their confidence to conquer life’s obstacles, to gain their goals and to be able to find themselves are the blessings for them. Deri even said, if he did not decided to join YCM years ago, he might be still no one until now or even end up in a jail.

My eyes were teary because I was so touched and blessed to be able to witness the success of the people around me. We, the founders of YCM did not regret our decision to establish YCM. We are so contended of being others’ dots in their lives, being able to assist others to find themselves and let them to assist others also.

Deri, Etika and many others are so thankful for your assistance. May many more people able to find inner peace and “find themselves” through this connection.
