Dreams have changed our lives!

Dimas
Dimas

Dimas, a young man who was born and grew up in the city of Bogor where YCM is located. Dimas is a special man, who stays on my mind. He is a polite and motivated person who wanted to change his life to be a better one.

I have simple stories yet inspirational about him and touched me deeply. Thus, let me introduce him first. I got to know Dimas since he came for the first time, when he joined YCM. A sixteen-year-old boy who could not continue his education to high school due his hardship of life. His father was working as a casual worker for construction. Who earned money when he had work to do, otherwise nothing to earn. His mother was a housewife. So, they to survive day by day base on the income Dimas’s father earned, if there was any. While for Dimas and two siblings, education is a luxury thing.

Dimas knew YCM from his friend who was also a neighbor of him. Both decided to join YCM and went to a package school together to be able to have a high school equivalent certificate or diploma sponsored through YCM. He and his friends learned English, personal development, and other skills. One most important thing of course to have dreams and be confident when meeting people.

His first story was about how he “listened” and try to apply the lessons he received. One day, as usual he walked from his house to YCM with his friend. On his way, he who had a candy in his pocket open the plastic wrap and just threw the plastic on the street. He seemed like care nothing about how to throw the rubbish to the rubbish bin like many other young people. But wait, he suddenly remembered the sharing lesson I had with his class some days before. He said, my words about the effect of littering the streets or any other areas could cause a disaster were sticking on his mind.  Well after more than 10 meters away, he returned and picked the rubbish and put it in to his pocket until he found a rubbish bin. A simple story he shared with me excitedly when showed up in my classroom at that time.

Another story about him was after he finally finished his package school and received his high school certificate. When he was asked to come to bring some foods for his aunt at her working place (Dimas’s aunt was a house maid who worked for an expat family). When the owner of the house saw Dimas, while at that time some guests who were the family of the owner from abroad just recently arrived. The boss of his aunt then asked Dimas to take the guests for a tour around Bogor. The guests were amazed by his confidence and his English although he did not go a formal school. Then they asked about his dream and so on. Dimas could clearly answer the questions. Well, not long after, the family of his aunt’s boss decided to give Dimas a scholarship to be able to continue his education and reach his dreams. Finally, he could study in an institute of hotel and tourism. He tried his best and proved us that precise dreams, good attitude, knowledge, and confidence will bring positive impacts to our lives.

Well, another goosebump story for me was when he was going to an internship in a hotel in Batam island, to be there he needed to go by an airplane. When he was waiting in a boarding room, he messaged me and, in his message, he told me that his dream to take an airplane inspired by my story to take an airplane also. He listened to what we shared, he got inspired and had dreams to where he is now.  My eyes were teary when I received his message. He made me proud and touched.

Dimas is a married man and a father of two little kids now, his life has changed to a better one. He is now working in a tourism industry and an event organizer.

Being able to witness the development and improvement of many people who eagerly learned and did their best is a bless for us at YCM.

We will be no one without the supports from many parties. We are so grateful that we are still able to continue our works to assist many young people who need us. Endless thanks for all who lend their hands for YCM.

Warm regards from Bogor, Indonesia.
