We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful closing to our time in Mixtequilla: with colors, brushes, and shared stories, we brought art to the walls of the town.
If you’ve been with us from the start, you’ll know that for us, murals are more than decoration. They’re living reminders that the true wealth of a territory is its people—and that no crisis or pain can take away our identity or worth.
Now more than ever, we recognize the power of coming together as women to influence decisions about our territory and to make visible the violence we face every day as the ones who sustain community life.
To mark the end of this chapter, we invited the artist Jade to co-create a community mural alongside the women of Mixtequilla. It was a deeply enriching experience, reflecting the collective spirit and emotional beauty of the group of women we've built over the past year.
Now, it’s time to move our Women Mapping the Territory program to a new community. We'll share more details soon—but before that, we want to leave you with Jade’s moving reflection on her time with us:
“I’ve shared many collective mural workshops with children and teenagers. This was my first time doing it with women—mothers, heads of households, adult women who care for their homes and their communities.
I felt so touched and proud of them, and grateful for the work that allows me to step into the everyday life of a community like this one.
It was powerful to witness their empathy and sensitivity, their willingness to try something new, to quite literally leave their mark. They gave themselves permission to create, to be present as a circle, as a team of women who aren’t afraid of criticism—women who support each other, who break out of their usual roles to see and care for one another.
I am deeply thankful for this opportunity to connect through art, to strengthen these circles of women rooted in community.
Thank you for letting me step into your land and your lives. What I’ve learned from sharing time with these women—and from experiencing the richness of their culture and identity—is invaluable.
I hope this mural becomes a seed of creativity. May it inspire joy and well-being. Through it, may they see themselves as guardians of the land, as artists, as women capable of transforming their world—recognizing their beauty, their power, and their uniqueness in their faces, minds, and hearts.”
Thank you for believing in this journey. Every step, every brushstroke, is possible because of your support.
With deep gratitude,
Una mano para Oaxaca Team
