This project supports indigenous female artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico by providing business skills training to help them build their own traditional handicraft microenterprises. Our region has faced many economic crises and land dispossession, today, we are the area of the state with the highest unemployment in the region and the most dangerous for women. With your support, we can improve the quality of life for 90 Zapotec families, reduce economic violence, and boost local economic development.
The crisis we face is urgent to address as it is the constituent basis of the violence that places, today, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec as the most dangerous region for women in the state. 85% of indigenous women in the southeast of Mexico only have access to low-paid and informal jobs. In many cases, if we start a business, since we do not have seed capital to invest, we must resort to loan funds that have such high interest rates that perpetuate the poverty we live in our communities.
Since 2017, we have been promoting indigenous artisan cooperatives to create fair working conditions that promote the economic and social well-being of entrepreneurial families. We are committed to generating self-employment by learning traditional trades, in an innovative and culturally appropriate way, enjoying spaces for our emotional containment, and obtaining training and material support to grow and formalize enterprises. We want more women to live a solidarity economy and more collectives
We have trained 36 cooperatives and more than 300 people. An economy that rescues the knowledge that embraces our culture, creates sustainable livelihoods. It will be possible to reduce the violence and insecurity experienced by women in the region by improving the economy, creating networks and safe spaces for us. We know that this does not seem like an emerging problem, yet what we are experiencing is the same suffering and inequality that has catalyzed the violence that is sweeping the world.
