Lusangazi farmers rely on horticulture farming for their source of employment and income for their household needs. Most the farmers there own their own land and work full time in the fields to produce more for both household consumption and commercial purposes. The project identified 57 rural which are in great need of accessing structured markets. However, they firstly need to boost their farming and produce high quality farm produce. This way, finding good markets will not be a problem.
The project identified 57 rural and informal farmers in Lusangazi area that are working as a group. These farmers, which are working as a group, grow horticultural crops and they have been doing this for some decades. The farmers face challenges of markets for their produce and also capacity to sustain their farming to remain fruitful. The project supports these farmers with agriculture tools mainly treadle pumps, sprayers, seeds that are highly resistant to diseases, wheelbarrows, among others.
The farmers will benefit with high yield which will be sold in structured and formal markets which are managed by the local partner. The assistance will improve the quality of crops grown by these farmers which will eventually increase the income they earn from their agricultural produce. Women form a greater percentage of this group and they make most of the decisions through discussions they hold during the group's weekly meetings.
