Aditi's story...

By Soph Stephens | Digital Manager

Aditi is from the Wadar Wasti community in Pune, where her family has lived for many years. Her community is marginalised from society and often excluded from socio-economic life. Aditi's family face many financial challenges and as a result of poverty and exclusion, awareness is limited about the importance of education for their children in their community.

Aditi first met our partner organisation Nirman when she was 15 years old. After achieving an incredible score of 62% in her final exams, she was excited about the prospect of continuing her education. However, her family was hesitant to support her ambitions due to their financial situation and there were discussions about early marriage instead. Aditi was terrified that she might not be able to continue her education.

During one of the meetings, Aditi bravely shared her concerns with the Nirman team. Recognising the urgency of her situation, the team reached out to her parents, they emphasised how education could not only transform Aditi’s life but their family's future too. After several follow-ups, her parents began to understand the value of education and agreed to support Aditi's studies.

As Aditi participated in various sessions on child rights, life skills, and the impacts of child labour, she became more aware of her rights and entitlements and was empowered to continue to pursue her dreams. This year, she successfully completed the 11th standard with a score of 64% and is determined to continue onto higher education.

Aditi endeavours to find a job in the government sector and is now an advocate for girl’s education.

Your support means more girls like Aditi can remain in education and lead a life of choice and hope.

Thank you
