In rural Uganda, 40% of girls are married before 18, ending their education and limiting their futures. This project keeps girls in school, provides scholarships, mentorship, and life skills training, and works with communities to delay marriage. By empowering girls and changing social norms, we help them complete their education, gain confidence, and build brighter futures.
Early child marriage is a major challenge in rural Uganda, where nearly 1 in 3 girls are married before age 18, and in some regions, rates rise to 40% or higher. These girls face health risks, early pregnancy, and the abrupt end of their education, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting their potential.
The Girl Child Foundation believes every girl deserves to finish school and plan her future. This project tackles early marriage through outreach, education support, and advocacy. Workshops with parents and leaders highlight that child marriage raises dropout rates by 65% and health risks. We provide scholarships, school supplies, and mentorship to help girls, as less than 50% complete secondary school in these rural areas, while building life skills and engaging local leaders to shift norms.
The project will reduce early marriage rates in target communities, where over 10,000 girls are at risk annually, increase school attendance and retention, addressing the gender gap in secondary education. Empower girls to make informed life choices and develop leadership skills and change community attitudes toward child marriage through education and advocacy.
