Many women in Nigeria face serious mental health challenges that are often ignored due to ethnicity, stigma, and poor access to care. This project aims to reduce these inequalities by increasing access to mental health education, counseling, and community-based support for women from marginalized ethnic groups. Through trained counselors and local awareness programs, the project will help women find safe spaces to seek help, share their experiences, and regain their sense of dignity and hope.
In Nigeria, mental health remains a neglected issue, & ethnic differences make it worse for women. Many women from minority groups experience discrimination & cultural stigma that prevent them from seeking help. In some communities, mental illness is linked to spiritual causes, leading to shame/isolation. Most health centers lack trained mental health workers/counseling facilities, especially in rural areas. As a result, women suffer in silence, with limited understanding of their conditions.
This project will establish community-based counseling programs and train local volunteers to provide emotional support and guidance. Educational workshops will raise awareness about mental health and help communities understand that mental illness is a health issue, not a moral failure. The project will also work with traditional leaders and women's associations to encourage open conversations, acceptance, and early help-seeking behavior.
The project will reduce stigma, increase awareness, and create safe community spaces for women from all ethnic backgrounds to receive care and support. As the program continues, more women will be encouraged to seek counseling and share their experiences without fear or shame. The lasting impact will be a more compassionate society that treats mental health with care and fairness for every woman, regardless of ethnicity or background.
