AWARD Pakistan is committed to empowering marginalized communities, particularly the children of poor communities, through education. In rural Faisalabad, where poverty and illiteracy are rampant, AWARD launched an initiative to enroll children in non-formal education under its projects in the working areas.
Six-year-old Mariam lived in a small village near the brick kilns of rural Faisalabad. Her days were spent playing in the dust while her parents worked long hours to earn a meager living. Like many girls in her community, Mariam had never seen the inside of a classroom. That changed when AWARD Pakistan’s social mobilizers visited her village. With compassion and persistence, they spoke to Mariam’s parents about the importance of education, especially for girls. Encouraged by their support and the promise of a child-friendly learning space, her parents agreed. Mariam was enrolled in a non-formal education center supported by AWARD. Today, she arrives every morning with a smile, her small hands clutching a slate and a dream. She sings rhymes, learns numbers, and talks about becoming a teacher one day. Mariam’s journey has just begun—thanks to AWARD, she now has hope, confidence, and a brighter future ahead.
