last year Amani launched a pig husbandry alternative protein project! We have a healthy group of four pigs, three females, and one male. Our first aim was to breed the female pigs, which are now pregnant, with an expected delivery of 30 piglets by the end of July. Our area is home to several tourist lodges, meaning the market for pork is great! Once grown to full size in a matter of months, these piglets will provide our children with an additional source of protein in their diets and an additional line of income year after year for our center!
In addition, the waste from this project is added to our biogas digester. This system processes organic waste at the children's home and creates a source of renewable fuel for our kitchens- lighting our fires and keeping our pots boiling! Together, our pig and biogas projects are a source of sustainable energy and income rolled into one, to ensure our center burns brightly for generations to come.
