Delayed Outbreak Response Puts Communities at Risk

By Joy Ojochogwu Etubi | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely thank the donors who have already supported the Epidemic Relief Fund for African Health Crises project. Your generosity shows concern for communities facing sudden disease outbreaks. However, the donations received so far are not sufficient to activate rapid response support at scale. Additional funding is needed to make this emergency fund fully operational.

Across many African communities, outbreaks such as cholera, Ebola, Lassa fever, and COVID-19 spread quickly when early response is delayed. Local health workers and small community groups are often the first to detect signs of an outbreak. Yet many lack immediate access to funds for transport, fuel, protective gear, or emergency supplies. Waiting for external assistance can take days or weeks, increasing infection rates and avoidable deaths.

Weak infrastructure and limited emergency reserves mean that even minor delays can overwhelm local clinics. Without quick intervention, infections spread from household to household and across villages.

This project will establish a rapid emergency relief fund to provide small, fast-track grants to frontline responders. Funds will cover urgent needs such as hygiene supplies, water treatment kits, temporary health tents, transport, and protective equipment. The grant process will be streamlined to allow timely approval and immediate deployment of resources.

By supporting early local response, the fund can help contain outbreaks before they escalate. Health workers will be able to act within hours rather than waiting for distant support. Quick access to basic tools can reduce infection spread and protect vulnerable populations.

Although initial donations have been received, more funding is required to build a reliable and responsive emergency pool. We kindly invite additional donors to support this effort and strengthen outbreak readiness across affected communities.

Sincerely,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
