Summary

In December 2014 at the height of the ebola crisis HWHL made the critical decision to accelerate the construction of a new health center, filling a major gap in health infrastructure in Margibi County. This large, purpose built facility, once operational will provide comprehensive basic medical and dental services, including a secure pharmacy, labs, and imaging. We are working with the Ministry of Health for certification of the facility by the end of August.

Challenge

As we prepare to open the new Medical Center hiring and training staff to fill the 23 new positions is the highest priority, but we still need many items to be ready to open the new clinic In May we received donation of a large storage tent and a very large donation of surplus medical furniture, equipment and supplies from Save the Children, who are closing the local Ebola Treatment Facility, but we still need many things to meet the minimum requirements for certification.

Solution

Once operational our new facility will provide the basic infrastructure to provide all comprehensive basic services, including dental care. With lab and ultrasound imaging services onsite we will have faster, more accurate diagnoses. We will be able to offer space for overnight, short stays during the long, 8 month rainy season. Medical outcomes will better if we can limit patient travel. With more trained staff and a better organized workspace, we will have increased patient outcomes.

Long-Term Impact

At the start of 2015 we defined ambitious plans-building a new Medical Center, doubling the number of trained healthcare workers, keeping Margibi County healthy and safe from ebola. With your help we have accomplished that work. When others left the country, we doubled down, investing more. We are still working to put the ebola crisis behind us. With your continuing support we are building new programs and services to give Liberian women and their families a healthier place to live and work.
