Keeping Girls Girls a Little Longer

By Kirabo cathy | Organization programs officer

Dear friends and supporters,

In the hills of Mwanyagiri and the dusty paths of surrounding settlements, childhood is a privilege many girls never receive. Too young to vote, too small to lift a water jug, yet old enough to be handed over as brides—this is the reality for far too many. Rejection by one family too often leads to enslavement by another. Widowed mothers, left without any safety net, watch helplessly as their daughters disappear into marriages forged not by love, but by hunger.

Imagine raising five children on a few dollars a week. Imagine choosing which child eats today. That is the daily arithmetic facing women like Nakato, whose husband was killed in violence she never understood. Her daughter, Rose, was nearly married off at twelve—until someone stepped in.

Through our work, we found a young orphaned boy living with his mother in a place where hope goes to wither. He and his mother share a single torn blanket. But small actions change everything. With help from people like you, we secured monthly support for this child—not for luxuries, but for the basics: a bag of rice, a bar of soap, a pair of sandals that actually fit. We paid for a used school uniform. We covered the small debt that kept his mother awake at night.

This is not charity as usual. This is a quiet rebellion against despair. For this boy, sponsorship means he no longer cries when his stomach aches. For his mother, it means looking in the mirror without shame. For Rose, still at risk but now watched over by our community workers, it means another year of freedom.

Your giving does not just fill a stomach. It shifts the balance of power in a family—from desperation to hope, from silence to dignity. Thank you for helping girls stay girls a little longer, and for proving that even in broken places, a steady hand can rebuild a future.
