Breaking the Cycle of Forced Marriage: Equipping Girl Leaders to Drive School Retention and Communit

By Naijuka aggie | Project leader

Thanks to your generosity, a transformative shift is taking place in communities where girls once faced limited opportunities and the persistent threat of early, forced marriage. By intentionally involving and empowering victimised girls to become leaders and advocates for their peers, we have created a powerful, ripple effect of change. These young women—once vulnerable and silenced—are now equipped with training, mentorship resources, and platforms to speak out, guide others, and demonstrate what resilience and leadership look like.

When other children witness peers who have overcome adversity stepping into visible roles of influence, it challenges fatalistic norms and plants a new belief: education is a viable, valuable path for them too. Seeing these girl leaders facilitate peer support groups, lead awareness campaigns on child marriage, and mentor younger students has encouraged many children—especially girls—to remain enrolled in school, pursue their goals, and reject coercive marriages.

Your support has enabled us to provide comprehensive leadership development, safeguarding tools, educational supplies, and ongoing psychosocial support so these girl advocates can act effectively and safely. They are now running after-school clubs, identifying at-risk children, and linking them to protection services and continued learning pathways. Their advocacy is not symbolic; it is producing measurable outcomes: improved school retention rates, delayed marriage ages, and growing community rejection of forced union practices.
