Helping Young Mothers Become Providers, Not Victims

By Ivan Seguya | Project leader

Abandoned teenage mothers are often viewed through the lens of their challenges. F SSIBU Mission Foundation believes communities should also recognize their abilities and potential.

Our work in Mukono and Eastern Uganda focuses on helping vulnerable teenage mothers develop skills and opportunities that can strengthen their ability to provide for their children.

Through vocational training, participants can learn tailoring, hairdressing, computer skills, electrical engineering and modern farming. These skills can create pathways toward employment, entrepreneurship and productive livelihoods.

Mentorship helps participants develop confidence and set realistic goals. Health education helps them make informed decisions regarding their reproductive health and wellbeing.

Supporting children is also part of the wider intervention. Where possible, vulnerable children can receive nutritional support, healthcare assistance and other essential services.

The combination of mother and child support helps reduce immediate pressure while building a foundation for longer-term independence.

Donors play an essential role in making this transformation possible. Funding can help provide training equipment, educational materials, mentorship, healthcare support and livelihood resources.

The goal is not to keep young mothers dependent on charitable assistance. It is to help them acquire the capabilities needed to gradually become more self-reliant.

A mother who develops a livelihood can become a provider. A mother who gains confidence can become a decision-maker. A mother who receives health education can become a stronger protector of her child.

This transformation benefits the entire household.

For donors, the opportunity is clear: support interventions that address immediate vulnerability while investing in long-term capacity.

Together, we can help young mothers in Mukono and Eastern Uganda move beyond being defined by abandonment and early motherhood.
