Breaking Isolation Through Community Mentorship and Support for Boys

By Ivan Seguya | Project leader

Many boys growing up in vulnerable communities in Mukono and Eastern Uganda face challenges that can affect their education, health, confidence and future opportunities. Poverty, family difficulties, peer pressure, drug and substance abuse, school dropout, unemployment and limited access to positive guidance can leave some boys isolated and uncertain about their future. Without supportive spaces, these challenges can increase their vulnerability to harmful behaviors and reduce their ability to reach their full potential.

F SSIBU Mission Foundation works to create supportive community spaces where vulnerable boys can access mentorship, life-skills education, digital training, sexual and reproductive health information and opportunities to develop practical skills. Through these interventions, boys are encouraged to build confidence, make responsible decisions and develop positive visions for their futures.

Community mentorship sessions provide boys with safe opportunities to discuss personal development, education, relationships, health, leadership, responsible behavior, goal setting and future careers. Mentors encourage participants to understand the consequences of risky choices while helping them identify positive alternatives.

Skills development provides another important pathway. Through computer training, electrical skills, modern farming and other practical learning opportunities, boys can acquire competencies that may prepare them for employment, entrepreneurship and productive livelihoods. Keeping boys engaged in constructive learning can also provide positive alternatives to idleness, harmful peer pressure and risky behaviors.

Sexual and reproductive health education helps boys understand HIV prevention, sexually transmitted infections, responsible relationships, consent, pregnancy prevention and healthy decision-making. This knowledge can contribute to healthier choices and more respectful relationships.

Donor support enables these community interventions to reach vulnerable boys who may otherwise have limited access to such opportunities. Contributions can support mentors, training materials, digital learning, outreach activities, workshops and follow-up support.

The transformation is about helping boys move from isolation toward belonging, from uncertainty toward purpose, and from vulnerability toward opportunity.

By investing in boys today, donors are helping develop healthier, skilled, responsible and empowered young men who can contribute positively to their families and communities tomorrow.
