Dear GlobalGivers,
This is a crucial month, especially for those who are working tirelessly to end child trafficking across the globe. Human trafficking is a global phenomenon, which affects girls as young as three years old.
In India, everyday children, mostly girls are trafficked for sexual slavery, child labour, domestic servitude and child brides. Even with stringent laws, violence against women and girls continues to rise unabated in India with as many as 2.24 million crimes against women and girls reported over the past decade.
Every8Minutes is working hard on ground by supporting organisations across India to end child trafficking. One such organization is Prerana-Anti Human Trafficking in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Prerana works in the red light districts of Mumbai to stop inter-generational prostitution. Prerana currently runs a shelter home for children of sex workers. iPartner India has been supporting Prerana since 2013 to run the shelter home.
On 10th May, Prerana collaborated with Safecity and Vital Voice to host their annual ‘Global Mentoring Walk’. The mentoring walk brings together women leaders from diverse backgrounds to interact with young and dynamic women who aspire to bring about a change in their chosen careers.
As they walk, they discuss their professional challenges and successes and establish a mentoring relationship and the leader in turn guides, advises and supports her mentee. 15 young women and girls living at Prerana’s shelter home participated as mentees for this program. There were 10 mentors who facilitated the walk.
Every8Minutes is proud to support anti- child trafficking organisations like Prerana who are doing commendable work to end inter-generational prostitution. Many girls who are born in the brothels have high risk of being trafficked, sold or become sex workers eventually.
Zarina (name changed) is 18 years and currently studying in high school. During the Global Mentoring Walk, she shared with her mentor that she would like to make films and documentaries and has dreams to pursue Bachelors in Mass Media. After completing her Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC), Zarina will apply for the course in a reputed college. During the walk her mentor appreciated and encouraged her to be consistent and keep trying till she achieves her goal.
“My confidence has enhanced and I have no fear to talk in English. I have received my result and I scored 64% in HSC. I found it difficult to secure a seat in a college due to institutional constrains but with Prerana’s support I have secured admission at SNDT located at Matunga, Mumbai. Currently, I have started attending college from July. I am excited to begin a new journey.”
Despite all the grime statistics, we remain committed to work hard and continue to raise our voice until this modern day shame ends.
We are grateful to many of you for your continued support in our fight against ending child trafficking in India. We urge you to stand with us because together we are stronger.
With deep gratitude,
iPartner India Team
