World Day Against Trafficking in Persons 2016

Dear Global Givers,

To mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons on 30 July, the Every8Minutes campaign collaborated with 17 partner organisations across 11 states in India.

More than 10,000 people were reached through the campaign in 11 states in 15 locations. Around 2000 people took a pledge to show their support to fight against child trafficking.

Across the country, children used street plays, dance, songs, held rallies and took part in drawing competitions to spread awareness on the practice of trafficking.

In Delhi, Every8Minutes in partnership with Jamghat, STOP, CHETNA, Kat-Katha and Udayan Care hosted an event at Dilli Haat on 31 July 2016.

The Every8minutes campaign continues to aim to spread awareness about the exploitation and abuse trafficked children face, and get more people to report suspected traffickers and victims to the authorities by dialling 1098, India’s ChildLine number.

The Every8Minutes campaign will hold another national campaign during the 16 days of Activism on Violence Against Women and Girls planned from November 25 to December 10, 2016. We will come back to you again to seek your support during the campaign. Watch out for this space for more information.

Through this campaign, we are trying to highlight the horrors of child trafficking in our neighbourhoods and towns. This can happen to any of our children in our neighbourhood or across the street. Child trafficking is a stark reality we face today as a civilised society.

National Campaign on Child Trafficking 30 July 2016

Dear Global Givers,

According to Global Slavery Index Report (2014), India has the highest number of enslaved people in the world with a staggering number of 14 million people. 1 out of 3 are children.

Delhi Police data shows that every day 22 children goes missing in Delhi.

These horrifying numbers are difficult to comprehend how children in India are faced with eminent dangers daily from traffickers. Many children and young girls are trafficked daily in India for sexual slavery, bonded labours, cheap domestic help and beggary.

You have been a part of the Every8Minutes to help spread awareness on the horrific crimes committed against children by traffickers. The ongoing campaign aims to spread awareness amongst general public to openly condemn the supply and demand of young children who are trafficked for sexual slavery.

“We work with vulnerable children who are homeless in Jama Masjid area of Old Delhi. Almost everyday parents come to us to help them register a missing child with the police. This is the sad reality we witness everyday as part of our job.

We are proud to be associated with iPartner India and Every8Minutes to be part of this crucial National Campaign. Our children will hold a silent walk in Jama Masjid area to spread awareness about the dangers of child trafficking.” Amit Sinha, Founder Director, Jamghat

To mark the United Nations’ World Anti-Trafficking Day in Persons, 30 July 2016, Every8Minutes is collaborating with 17 partner organizations in 11 states in 15 locations across India. Young women and children will use street plays, dance, singing, rallies, painting and drawing competitions to spread awareness about the dangers of trafficking. School children, teachers, community members, NGOs, police, local administration and local media will actively participate to mark the day.

“We are excited to be part of Every8Minutes campaign for the second time. Our NGO is located in the hinterlands of Bihar, where many young girls and children are prone to trafficking. This campaign will be a great opportunity to collaborate with local police and administration to garner their support in our fight against child trafficking.” Dr Frazana Begum, Founder and Secretary, RAHAT.

The campaign will also inspire public to take action in their hands by reporting to local police, local Anti Human Trafficking Units and other local administrations if they see any child in danger. The campaign will empower them to report seeing any child in distress to the national helpline, CHILDLINE 1098.

As you are reading this report, we will be hitting the streets and other public places around the country, determined to spread the message of child trafficking boldly and loudly until this societal shame and menace is eradicated from our society.

International Women's Day Celebration

Dear Global Givers,

Every8Minutes Team celebrated International Women’s Day at Pushkar, Rajasthan with more than 200 women and young girls from the Bedia community. The Bedia community in Rajasthan practices an age-old tradition where girls are introduced to prostitution at a very young age. The girls are forced to take charge of earning a livelihood for their families through sex trade, while men stay at home or become pimps.

Women and girls travelled to Pushkar, a two and half hours drive from Jaipur. The trip was especially planned for them so that they can step out of their homes and celebrate International Women’s Day. Many of these women who are former sex workers are now being rehabilitated with alternative livelihoods programme, set up with your support. The programme also helps to prevent second-generation prostitution for many children of sex workers. Women and children celebrated the day with inspirational life experiences, joyful music and dance. It was a day to claim their rights and their space!

Some of the women, currently undergoing the alternative livelihoods programme were appreciated with cash awards for showing exemplary courage and resilience against a live of unimaginable abuse and degradation. Such recognition of small steps towards independence will motivate the other girls to push their boundaries. All of this is possible due to your regular support. It enabled us to support Vatsalya an organization in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Vatsalya works towards breaking the cycle of trafficking by enabling women and young girls in sex work to make a bold choice to step out of a life of violence and abuse and retrain in an alternative livelihoods programme.

*Nisha Khan is 24 years old. She is a single parent and lives with her 10 year old son and widowed mother in Ajmer, Rajastahn. Nisha was married off at 14 years and by 16 she had her son. Her husband left her six months later and she was left penniless to take care of herself and her baby. Since being part of the alternative livelihoods programme, Nisha now earns more than Rs 5000 (£50) a month. Her son attends school regularly and she also takes care of her cancer stricken mother. Nisha is one of the woman who received the cash prize award. Nisha is also working as a peer educator, educating young girls from her community about the dangers of practicing unsafe sex and the high chances of contracting HIV/AIDS.

“I never had the opportunity to go to school. I want my son to do well for himself. I feel frustrated at times because I cannot help him with his homework. But joining the livelihoods programme has given me the confidence to do things I never imagined I could, like taking my mother for her cancer treatment. I take my own decisions and also decide on how I wish to spend the money I earn.”

Dear global givers, we are able to help girls like Nisha to exercise their rights and find alternative dignified solutions to earn their livelihoods. There are still many girls from the Bedia community, as young as 13 years, who are trapped into prostitution We hope you will continue to support us so that young women and girls like Nisha will experience the joy of childhood and not become child brides.
