At the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF), we believe that mental health is as critical as physical health. The Advocacy for Mental Health Awareness initiative was created to address the stigma, misinformation, and lack of access to mental health resources affecting communities in Southeastern Nigeria.
Mental health challenges are widespread, yet often invisible. Many individuals suffer in silence due to fear, shame, or lack of support. Through this project, we aim to raise awareness, provide education, and create safe spaces for dialogue, helping individuals and communities understand, support, and prioritize mental well-being.
Project Activities During This Period
During this reporting period, the project team focused on preparation, planning, and community engagement:
• Developing educational materials and awareness campaigns tailored for local communities
• Mapping community stakeholders, schools, and youth groups for outreach
• Engaging local mental health practitioners and volunteers to participate in training and advocacy
• Preparing plans for workshops, seminars, and peer support activities
We would like to transparently share that no donations have yet been received for this project. While this has delayed the direct implementation of workshops and community events, it has not diminished our resolve. The team continues to lay the groundwork to ensure maximum impact once funding becomes available.
Challenges
The project faces several challenges, including:
• Limited funding to support community workshops and mental health awareness campaigns
• Societal stigma and misconceptions about mental health, which can hinder engagement
• Need for trained facilitators and materials for outreach
Despite these challenges, the team remains committed to ensuring that mental health advocacy reaches those who need it most, particularly in underserved communities.
Looking Ahead: Little by Little Campaign
We are hopeful about the upcoming Little by Little Campaign (March 17 – March 20), which provides an opportunity for supporters to contribute towards mental health awareness initiatives.
Donations during this campaign, while matching funds remain, can help us:
• Conduct workshops and seminars on mental health awareness
• Develop and distribute educational materials
• Train community volunteers as peer advocates and mental health champions
• Create safe spaces for dialogue and support for vulnerable individuals
Even small contributions can have a profound impact, helping communities to recognize, understand, and address mental health challenges.
Next Steps
Once funding is received, the project will:
• Launch community-based awareness workshops across Southeastern Nigeria
• Train volunteers to serve as mental health advocates
• Partner with schools, youth groups, and local organizations for outreach programs
• Conduct follow-up assessments to gauge awareness levels and community impact
These steps will ensure that the initiative promotes understanding, reduces stigma, and provides practical guidance and support for individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
Gratitude to Our Supporters
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to all donors, supporters, and advocates who understand the importance of mental health.
Although no donations have yet been received, your interest, encouragement, and awareness-raising are invaluable.
We also thank GlobalGiving for providing a platform that connects organizations like ours with compassionate supporters worldwide, enabling us to deliver programs that matter and measure their impact.

Mental health challenges are real, impactful, and often unspoken. By supporting the Advocacy for Mental Health Awareness project, you can help:
• Educate communities about mental health
• Reduce stigma and promote acceptance
• Train volunteers to provide peer support
• Provide guidance and resources to those in need
Every contribution helps ensure that vulnerable individuals are not left to struggle in silence, and that communities are equipped to support one another.
Closing Reflection
Mental health is a cornerstone of community well-being. By raising awareness, providing education, and fostering dialogue, we help individuals live healthier, more balanced lives.
Together, with your support, we can build a society that recognizes the importance of mental health, values the well-being of its members, and empowers communities to care for one another.
With gratitude and hope,
