Update on the progress report on

By Samuel Akaraonye | Founder/CEO

Mental health remains a critical public health issue in Southeast Nigeria, yet it is often neglected due to stigma, misinformation, and inadequate resources. The Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF) is committed to advocating for mental health awareness, education, and policy change. Although we have not received funding for this initiative, we continue to explore strategic pathways to drive impactful mental health advocacy.

Progress and Initiatives Despite the lack of financial support, we have initiated various groundwork efforts to promote mental health awareness:

1. Community Sensitization and Engagement

We have conducted informal discussions with community leaders, religious organizations, and youth groups to raise awareness about mental health challenges and reduce stigma.

Plans are underway to develop community-based mental health forums where individuals can openly discuss their experiences and seek guidance.

2. Strategic Partnerships and Collaboration

We are engaging with mental health professionals, psychologists, and counselors to develop an outreach framework for public education on mental health issues.

Discussions are ongoing with universities and research institutions to integrate mental health advocacy into academic programs and community service initiatives.

3. Digital Advocacy and Awareness Campaigns

Leveraging social media platforms, we have launched mental health awareness posts, infographics, and short videos to educate the public on mental wellness, stress management, and available mental health services.

Plans are in motion to host virtual webinars featuring mental health experts to address common mental health concerns and coping strategies.

4. Policy Advocacy and Legislative Engagement

We are working towards engaging local policymakers to push for the inclusion of mental health programs in public health agendas.

A proposal is being developed for submission to relevant government agencies advocating for increased funding and policy support for mental health initiatives in Southeast Nigeria.

Challenges and Opportunities

Funding Constraints: The lack of financial resources limits the scale and reach of our advocacy efforts.

Cultural Stigma: Many communities still associate mental health issues with supernatural beliefs, making it difficult to foster open conversations.

Opportunities for Growth: With potential funding and increased partnerships, we can expand our reach through larger advocacy events, media campaigns, and grassroots mental health training programs.

Future Prospects and Next Steps

Strengthen our advocacy campaigns through strategic collaborations with health-focused organizations, government agencies, and corporate sponsors.

Develop mental health support networks in schools, workplaces, and community centers to provide counseling and intervention services.

Launch a comprehensive mental health training program targeting educators, healthcare workers, and community leaders to increase awareness and support structures.

Seek funding through grant applications, crowdfunding initiatives, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs.

Conclusion Although we are yet to secure funding, our resolve to champion mental health awareness in Southeast Nigeria remains strong. Through advocacy, partnerships, and digital engagement, we are building the foundation for a more informed and supportive society. We invite stakeholders, donors, and well-wishers to collaborate with us in making mental health advocacy a priority for all.

Best Regards,
Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation
