Assistive devices for mobility allow persons with disabilities (PWDs) to become independent and equal members of society thereby empowering them. Currently, PWDs' access to mobility devices is severely limited due to their high costs. Through this project, the students of SZABIST (BBA) will raise funds to provide assistive devices for mobility (e.g., crutches, wheelchairs, and even hearing aids) to PWDs who need them the most.
Persons with disabilities (PWDs) with mobility impairments are restricted from their basic right to independently navigate the public sphere. As a result, they are unable to access the same educational and vocational opportunities as those without disabilities. Hence, PWDs are systematically denied the right to participate in society and remain stuck in a vicious cycle of poverty and inequality.
NOWPDP has identified the provision of assistive devices to PWDs as an essential aspect of empowering them as individuals in society. However, the high costs associated with mobility and hearing aids makes them almost entirely inaccessible to PWDs thereby restricting their participation in society. By contributing to this fundraiser, SZABIST students will be helping NOWPDP meet the costs of providing assistive devices (e.g., crutches and wheelchairs) to PWDs who cannot afford them on their own.
Mobility aids will empower PWDs to step into the public sphere enhancing their visibility and paving the way for a more inclusive society. In the long-term, these assistive devices will enable PWDs to avail their basic rights such as going to school, accessing places of employment, or even just occupying public spaces for leisure and enjoyment.
