Update on roots micro-enterprise
Roots is an Eco- Sanitary Toilet which allows safe collection of solid and liquid waste for conversion into nutrient-rich fertilizer. The content in warehouse was processed which resulted to the first batch of fertilizer. The main aim of producing these fertilizer is to encourage the community farmers to embrace organic farming hence reducing the effects that are caused by non-organic fertilizer. This will be our community pillar to empower the community through child centred initiatives.
We have set up a trial farm to test vermicompost and vermiliquid from our Roots project in partnership with Wessex Social Ventures (WSV). In the trial farm, crop used for testing the different types of fertilizers is maize in the six beds as follows:
Bed A - DAP Fertilizer
Bed B - Vermicompost
Bed C - Cow manure
Bed D - Roots Solid fertilizer (Vermiliquid)
Bed E-Vermiliquid
Bed F- No manure or fertilizer
WSV picked samples of the vermicompost and vermiliquid for lab testing to determine its safety prior to us making any sales.

Introduction of Soap and Mask making
In partnership with Wessex Social Ventures (WSV) we introduced liquid hand wash and bar soap making , to our guardians for additional income generating activity to boost their living .The business focuses on improving children and families health hence promoting hygiene. Through staff support we have worked hand in hand with the guardians to market the soap in various places. The introduction of the soap has also contributed to individual positive behavioural change through washing hand to minimize the spread of Covid-19 infections. On top of making soap staff leant new skills of making a triple layer mask which is affordable to the community during this tough time of Covid-19 pandemic. The mask making has enabled community access the product easily within the locality.
