At the Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation (SOHF), we believe that every human life deserves dignity, care, and nourishment, regardless of circumstance. The “Feed 500 Insane Patients in Southeastern Nigeria” initiative was created to address the urgent nutritional needs of institutionalized patients who often face neglect and inadequate meals due to limited resources.

Across mental health facilities in Southeastern Nigeria, many patients suffer from malnutrition, health complications, and neglect, which can exacerbate existing mental health challenges. Through this project, we aim to provide nutritious, balanced meals that support their overall health, well-being, and quality of life.

Project Activities During This Period

During this reporting period, the project team focused on planning, community engagement, and operational preparations, ensuring readiness for full implementation once funding is secured.

Key activities include:

• Conducting needs assessments at target institutions to determine nutritional requirements
• Engaging with facility staff and caregivers to coordinate meal delivery and distribution
• Preparing logistics, food sourcing, and menu planning for nutrient-rich meals
• Raising awareness about the urgent need to support mental health patients with proper nutrition

At this stage, no donations have yet been received specifically for this project, but the team remains committed to restoring dignity and improving health outcomes for patients.

Challenges

The project faces several challenges, including:
• Limited funding to cover the cost of nutritious meals for 500 patients
• Logistics and coordination for timely delivery of meals to multiple facilities
• Ensuring balanced nutrition that meets the dietary needs of patients with different health conditions

Despite these challenges, the team is determined to ensure that patients receive the nourishment they need, and to demonstrate that every life matters.

Little by Little Fundraising Campaign

We are excited to share that the Little by Little fundraising campaign has begun, providing a timely opportunity for supporters to make a direct, meaningful impact in the lives of these patients.
Donations during this campaign, while matching funds remain, will directly support:
• Provision of daily nutritious meals for 500 patients
• Procurement of essential food items and supplements to ensure balanced nutrition
• Training for caregivers on meal preparation and patient nutrition
• Monitoring and reporting to ensure meals reach all beneficiaries effectively
Even small contributions go a long way, helping patients receive the care and nourishment they deserve.

Next Steps

Once funding is received, the project will:
• Procure nutritious food items in bulk to cover daily meals
• Deliver meals consistently to the 500 patients in target institutions
• Track meal distribution and nutritional outcomes to ensure impact and accountability
• Engage local volunteers and caregivers to support feeding programs sustainably

These steps will ensure that patients not only receive meals, but also experience improved health, well-being, and dignity.

This quarter, although we did not receive any donations, our dedication to feeding and supporting mentally challenged and homeless psychiatric patients across Southeast Nigeria remains firm. These individuals are some of the most neglected and forgotten members of society — abandoned, vulnerable, and often without access to food, care, or basic support.

Current Status

This quarter, we focused on:

Mapping the areas with the highest concentration of mentally challenged individuals in Imo, Abia, and Anambra States.

Working with local caregivers, community leaders, and volunteers to identify those in urgent need of food and hygiene support.

Preparing logistics and food supply networks for our next major outreach.

Even without funding, we have been laying the foundation for an impactful intervention.

December/January Community Outreach Plans

With your support, we aim to carry out a compassionate and life-saving outreach this December/January, which will include:

Feeding 500 mentally challenged individuals

providing cooked meals, cereals, fruits, and water.

Hygiene & Dignity Support

giving out soap, wipes, clothing, and basic sanitary items.

Medical Referral Support

linking severe cases to local mental health facilities where possible.

Psychosocial Interaction

spending time with beneficiaries to remind them that they are seen, valued, and loved.

This outreach is crucial — many of these individuals survive solely on the kindness of strangers.

We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our partners, stakeholders, and the GlobalGiving community for their continued interest in our mission, even as we await tangible funding support for this vital project. Mental health continues to be one of the most under-resourced sectors in Nigeria, particularly for individuals living with severe psychiatric conditions. Our project, Feed 500 Insane Patients in Southeast Nigeria, remains a beacon of hope for these vulnerable individuals who are often neglected and marginalized.

Project Status

As of this reporting period, no funds have been raised for this project. Nonetheless, we have sustained our groundwork and strategic development in preparation for its full implementation once funding becomes available.

Key Developments

1. Strategic Planning and Stakeholder Engagement

We have deepened consultations with food vendors, supermarkets, religious institutions, and charitable groups, fostering a broader coalition of support aimed at food donation, logistics, and outreach.

2. New Technological Collaboration

On July 20, 2025, we entered into a transformative partnership with Isidore CompetitivAI Avatar—a groundbreaking voice-powered AI assistant developed to enhance communication, coordination, and operational efficiency across all levels of our organization.

This partnership marks a paradigm shift in how we manage humanitarian services. Through this AI integration:

Data collection on mentally ill beneficiaries will become more accurate and streamlined.

Volunteer coordination and meal distribution logistics will be optimized using real-time tracking and planning features.

Awareness campaigns will be amplified across multilingual platforms with AI-generated content and scheduling tools.

Donor engagement will benefit from personalized communications and reporting systems.

This leap into digital innovation empowers SOHF to manage this project with greater precision, visibility, and sustainability, despite existing financial constraints.

3. Community-Based Support Systems

We continue to liaise with traditional leaders, community volunteers, and faith-based groups to build robust, locally driven support systems for food preparation and delivery.

4. Long-Term Vision and Sustainability

We are refining a proposal for the establishment of community kitchens and mobile food delivery units, specifically targeting psychiatric centers and known homeless populations in urban slums.

Challenges and Opportunities

Funding Limitations: Absence of donations remains the primary challenge. However, our strategic preparations ensure we are ready to act once funds arrive.

Logistical Constraints: Coordinating feeding programs across multiple locations remains complex without vehicles or dedicated storage facilities.

Growing Potential: With the integration of AI through Isidore CompetitivAI, and continued outreach, we anticipate this initiative attracting major support from philanthropists, foundations, and CSR sponsors.

Next Steps

Launch a pilot feeding intervention using donated food items and volunteer support in a select psychiatric facility.

Roll out AI-powered campaign tools to intensify online and offline fundraising.

Initiate proposal submission to development partners and CSR units for targeted sponsorship.

Conclusion

Even without financial support to date, our resolve remains unshaken. The plight of mentally ill individuals in Southeast Nigeria calls for urgent, compassionate, and sustained action. With our new AI-driven approach and growing grassroots partnerships, we are positioning this project for effective, impactful, and long-term implementation.
