School Meals Programme for Vulnerable Children in Sri Lanka

By Joel Stanier | Project Development Manager

Dear friends and supporters,

Recently, a Give B(l)ack Friday event was organized by Mercury Holidays, and it managed to raise £15,950. The funds raised from this event and this campaign are being utilized for a school meals programme, which will feed 260 vulnerable children in two schools located in the poorest tea plantation region in Sri Lanka, on a daily basis, for one whole year. This programme is particularly important for families living in this region as they face the highest level of food insecurity.

It's difficult to put into words the ceremonial welcome, speeches of gratitude, music, and dancing that followed. The highlight of the event was the magical moment when 165 children between the ages of 6 and 17 sat down together in the main hall (which doubles as several classrooms) to enjoy a hot, nutritious meal for the first time in three years. Not a single morsel was left, and the smiles of pure happiness lit up every corner of the room, especially when the children received school book packs as well!

In just a few days, the impact was clear. Six more children enrolled, and there were no fainting incidents, no dropouts, and 100% attendance. According to a report by the World Food Programme, school feeding programmes are essential for more than just combatting hunger. They also strengthen families' capacities to care for their children by alleviating financial and emotional strains, which can leave vulnerable children's needs unmet and increase their chances of abandonment.

During our CEO's recent visit, she discovered that one of the children we support, Yomini, still has a dream of becoming a journalist. Thanks to Mr Percy, she has been introduced to a local ITV broadcasting team and is now learning public speaking. As a result, she has had a couple of engagements as a Master of Ceremonies, and we plan to book her for our next event if she has the time. It was heartwarming to see Yomini's mother standing happily with her loving and supportive family, especially considering she was extremely sick and bedridden when we first met them four years ago.

The impact of chronic illness on families who receive no income support or free medication is significant, and the generosity of our sponsors has been life-changing in not only restoring a mother's health but also the entire family's survival. Meeting other families in similarly desperate circumstances, especially before the economic crisis, was almost unbearable, and we are seeking more sponsors to help keep families together and change their lives forever.

With your donations, we can provide life-changing outcomes and empower women and families like Ayesha's. Your support enables us to repair her food cart and provide the resources she needs to start a business selling hot peanuts. Seeing Ayesha and her daughter laughing and playing happily while knowing we can give them the tools needed to build a future together is heartwarming and deeply satisfying. We owe this all to your support.

Yours sincerely,

Joel
