During our first project visit to Sri Lanka in two years, we were shocked to experience first-hand the deep financial and humanitarian crisis which is looming, as inflation rises to record levels and could lead to the bankruptcy of the country in 2022.
Many supermarket shelves were bare, and there is rationing of milk powder, sugar, lentils and other essentials. Restaurants are struggling to find the ingredients they need to stay open.
Covid19, and lack of tourism, is now affecting the entire country, and even the middle classes with jobs are struggling to make ends meet.
Five thousand more people are now living below the poverty line, and the vulnerable families we support in the rural areas are cutting meals from three to two a day. Many mothers didn’t have money to take sick children on the bus to the hospital, or to buy medicine.
Food inflation has risen by 21.5%, and we were shocked at the cost of £30 for bags of rice, lentils, dhal, sugar, flour, milk, eggs and vegetables, which is a sharp increase.
There are severe shortages of expensive gas cylinders, and many people are now cooking on wood fires. Some said the progress Sri Lanka has made over the past few years has been wiped away, and others said this situation was worse than in the 1970’s.
There's no doubt that the generous funds that you have donated to feed families is making a huge difference, and we pass their immense thanks and gratitude to you, for giving not only food but also human dignity.
Best wishes
Joel
