For families across Karamoja, northeastern Uganda, prolonged drought has become a serious threat to their food security and livelihoods. Repeated dry spells and severely below-average rainfall have damaged agricultural production, leaving many households with limited harvests and diminishing food reserves. Families that depend on farming and livestock are struggling to recover as the effects of drought continue to undermine their ability to meet daily needs.
According to the September 2026 Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) assessment, approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja are experiencing Crisis-level food insecurity or worse. This represents a significant increase from the earlier estimate of 473,000 people. The deterioration highlights the growing pressure on households already struggling with poverty and limited access to essential resources.
Children face particularly serious risks when families cannot afford sufficient nutritious food. The reported estimate of approximately 154,200 children under five affected by or expected to experience acute malnutrition underscores the need for urgent attention.
The Girl Child Foundation Uganda (GIFU) is appealing to international donors, humanitarian organizations, businesses, and compassionate individuals to help mobilize support for vulnerable communities.
Through GlobalGiving, we invite supporters to help strengthen efforts to address immediate food needs while encouraging longer-term solutions that improve resilience to drought.
Your support can help turn concern into action. Stand with Karamoja’s families and help protect vulnerable children from the devastating consequences of hunger.
