I visited Bangladesh last April in order to meet with the American Ambassador to Bangladesh, Hon. James Moriarty who made a trip to visit our Hope Foundation hospital in Cox's Bazar. The trip was a great success. I had the opportunity to talk with our hospital director - Mr. Jalal Uddin Shoaib who is currently the Country Director and is in charge of the hospital activities and all of Hope's projects in Bangladesh.
As has been mentioned in the project details, hospitals in Bangladesh do not serve food to the patients. It is a duty left to the families to send someone to the hospital three times a day to deliver hot food to their sick relatives. This is difficult for even the most able families. For the very poor, finding the money to cover travel costs is alone too much to bear, along with the time taken, lost wages and disruption to the entire family this added burden is considerable.
We are trying to set up an in-hospital meal system that will take the burden off the families of the poor so that adequately nutritious foods will be provided to the patients during their hospital stay. Until the outdoor kitchen is up and running, funding will be spent on buying ready made meals from a local eatery to provide hot meals to needy patients.
