Hunger and food insecurity remain critical challenges across South-East Nigeria, worsened by rising food inflation, unemployment, climate stress, and declining household purchasing power. Vulnerable groups—women, children, elderly persons, and low-income households—continue to struggle with access to nutritious and affordable meals.
The Fight Hunger & Food Insecurity Project (53057) was designed to provide sustainable, nutrition-focused solutions that go beyond emergency food aid by addressing the root causes of hunger through food innovation, local production, and capacity building.

Funding Status Update
During this reporting quarter, no funds were received through the GlobalGiving platform or other donor channels for this project.
Despite this limitation, the organization remained committed to the project’s objectives by leveraging internal resources, volunteer expertise, and social enterprise-driven solutions to sustain momentum and prevent total project stagnation.
Transparency remains a core value of SOHF, and this update reflects our commitment to honest reporting.
Key Activities & Strategic Innovations
In response to the funding gap and the escalating hunger crisis, SOHF adopted an innovation-led and self-sustaining approach through the establishment of two critical initiatives:
a) Establishment of Samony Wellness Cafeteria – Nutrient-Dense Fortified Foods
We established the Samony Wellness Cafeteria, a social-impact nutrition initiative focused on the development and provision of nutrient-dense, fortified, culturally familiar foods designed to combat hidden hunger and malnutrition.
Key Focus Areas:
Production of fortified meals using locally sourced grains, legumes, seeds, and botanicals
Emphasis on affordability, digestibility, and high nutrient bioavailability
Development of food options suitable for vulnerable groups, including children, elderly persons, and low-income earners
Promotion of food as preventive healthcare, not just calorie intake
This initiative represents a shift from short-term food relief to nutrition-centered food security, aligning with SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger), 3 (Good Health & Well-being), and 12 (Responsible Consumption & Production).
b) Establishment of Samony Food Innovation Training Hub
To address the long-term sustainability of food security, we also established the Samony Food Innovation Training Hub.
Objectives of the Hub include:
Training youths and women in food processing, fortification, preservation, and packaging
Building skills around affordable, nutrient-rich food formulation
Encouraging food entrepreneurship as a pathway out of poverty
Strengthening local food systems and reducing dependency on imported food products
The Training Hub is designed to serve as a capacity-building engine, empowering community members to become food producers, innovators, and job creators rather than aid dependents.
Beneficiaries Reached (Indirect & Preparatory Phase)
Although large-scale direct food distribution has not commenced due to funding constraints, the initiatives implemented during this quarter have begun to generate indirect benefits, including:
Community members accessing affordable fortified meals
Youths and women engaging informally in food innovation learning processes
Increased community awareness around nutrition, food quality, and healthy eating
These efforts lay a strong foundation for rapid scale-up once funding becomes available.
Key Outcomes & Early Impact
Maintained project continuity despite zero external funding
Shifted project strategy toward self-sustaining nutrition solutions
Established functional food and training infrastructure
Strengthened organizational resilience and innovation capacity
Positioned the project for faster, more efficient impact once donor support resumes
Challenges Encountered
Lack of donor funding limited the scale and speed of implementation
Rising costs of raw food materials due to inflation
High operational expenses associated with food production and training setup
Despite these challenges, the organization remained steadfast in pursuing impact-driven solutions.
Lessons Learned
Community-based social enterprises can act as buffers during funding gaps
Nutrition-focused interventions are more sustainable than calorie-only food aid
Local innovation and adaptive leadership are critical in fragile economic contexts
Plans for the Next Quarter
Subject to funding availability, the next quarter will focus on:
Scaling production of nutrient-dense fortified foods
Expanding structured training programs at the Food Innovation Hub
Targeted outreach to vulnerable households
Formal beneficiary tracking and monitoring
Strengthening partnerships and donor engagement through GlobalGiving
Closing Note to Donors & Partners
The hunger crisis in South-East Nigeria is urgent, but it is not insurmountable. With the right support, Samony Wellness Cafeteria and the Samony Food Innovation Training Hub can become powerful tools for transforming hunger into opportunity, malnutrition into wellness, and vulnerability into resilience.
We invite donors, partners, and well-wishers to stand with us as we move from survival-driven innovation to scaled, sustainable impact.
Warmest regards,
Sam Onyemaechi Humanitarian Foundation
