The coronavirus pandemic reached Guatemala in early March 2020. Since then, the government has been working to fight the spread of Covid-19 instituting measures such as: 1) closing the borders; 2) restricting public transportation; 3) setting a national curfew; 4) prohibiting inter-department travel and 5) requiring that all individuals wear masks in public spaces. This project will help low-income Guatemalans comply with government measures to fight the spread of Covid-19 in the country.
"If the coronavirus doesn't kill us, then hunger will." The isolation measures to fight the spread of Covid-19 in Guatemala have resulted in a loss of income, all or in part, for a majority of the country's poor. Lack of either savings or a social service net has left many families to depend on the kindness of their friends, families and neighbors to help them weather the crisis.
This project will provide emergency food supplies to prevent hunger among families who are in isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic.
By enabling families to continue isolation, this project will reduce the spread of Covid-19 in Guatemala and will therefore reduce the number of people requiring aid once the crisis is over.
