Imagine:A classroom full of children, dancing and singing, in the center is Andrew, the CharChar Trust's Education Officer, who has helped 10k children to learn English, and educate other teachers in child-friendly phonics teaching practices. Andrew and his colleagues are HEROS, they give 100% to a life changing future for the children. Please help our heroes to continue doing what they do the best - making teaching and learning active and fun, for a brighter future for all Malawian children!
Grey, dry and uninspiring textbooks are hardly the greatest encouragement for young children to learn a second language, but worse still, if the educational system lacks the resources to train teachers in the skills to teach in that language, or to teach the pronunciation of the language, the hurdle doesn't just challenge, it hurts, damaging the futures of millions of children forever. This is the challenge in Malawi today.
The CharChar Trust has been training a corps of Literacy Support Teachers in English Phonics, who are then posted to schools to share their skills and teaching resources with government teachers and primary school children. The program is designed based on our 10+ years' field work in Africa. The result is amazing, we've created a 400%+ improvement in reading skills in the first year. In 2020, we will train 50 teachers and provide for their basic needs, as we continue to support them to develop
We developed a colourful collection of English children's readers written for the African experience and for entertainment, so that children develop a passion for the language and reading for fun. 2. Form and financially support a corps of Literacy Support Teachers (LSTs) who specialise in English language development. So they can educate more children with the CharChar fun and engaging, child-centred phonics lessons, books, games and activities.
