Safe Fitness Spaces for Plus-Size Women

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear supporters,

We are reaching out to seek support for the “Fitness for Plus-Size Women Facing Body Shaming” project. At this time, no donations have been received, and your help is needed to begin this program and make safe fitness spaces available for women who are often excluded.

Many plus-size women in Nigeria avoid gyms and exercise groups because of teasing, rude comments, or being stared at. Public fitness spaces often make them feel judged rather than welcomed. This fear keeps many women from exercising, even when they want to improve their health. Over time, lack of movement and constant shame can lead to health problems, low self-esteem, and isolation.

This project plans to create a private and respectful fitness program for 100 plus-size women in Abuja. Sessions will be held in a closed, supportive environment where participants can move freely without fear of ridicule. Trained instructors will guide group workouts using simple, beginner-friendly routines. Basic fitness items will be provided, and short wellness talks will allow women to share experiences, build confidence, and support one another.

The program is designed to make fitness feel safe, calm, and encouraging. Women will learn simple exercises they can continue at home or with friends. Beyond physical movement, the sessions aim to reduce fear, stress, and loneliness linked to body shaming.

With your support, this project can help women take positive steps toward better health in an environment that respects them. Contributions will cover space rental, trainers, and basic materials needed to start the sessions. Your help can give many women the chance to care for their bodies without shame and feel accepted while doing so.

Sincerely,
Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
