Body Shaming Prevents Many Women from Exercising

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

Thank you for your interest in supporting this project. We appreciate everyone who believes that fitness, health, and wellbeing should be accessible to all women regardless of body size.

Many plus-size women avoid fitness activities not because they lack interest, but because they fear ridicule, unwanted attention, or negative comments. For some, previous experiences of teasing and embarrassment have created barriers that make joining public exercise programs difficult. As a result, many women miss opportunities to improve their physical health, build social connections, and participate in supportive wellness activities.

At present, no funding has been secured to begin implementation of this project. While there has been interest in the initiative, additional support is needed before activities can commence.

The project aims to establish a welcoming fitness program designed specifically for plus-size women in Abuja. Participants will have access to guided exercise sessions, supportive coaching, basic fitness equipment, and wellness discussions focused on confidence, self-care, and healthy living. The program is intended to create an environment where women feel comfortable participating without fear of judgment.

Beyond fitness, the project seeks to address the social isolation and emotional challenges that body shaming can create. Many women simply need a safe space where they can focus on their health while being encouraged and respected.

We remain committed to bringing this initiative to life and continue seeking the support needed to launch the first phase. Once implementation begins, we look forward to sharing updates, photographs, and stories from participants.

Thank you for standing with women who deserve supportive spaces to improve their health and wellbeing.

Warm regards,

Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
