"I am the mother of 7 children and the only provider for our family is my 17-year-old son. He works as a day laborer doing whatever small job he can find. Since my husband passed away, it has been very hard for us to manage. We were facing a food shortage this month, and there wasn't much left for the coming weeks. I was very worried, as I always am, because we are a large family with only one food provider, and he earns very little." - Widow and food aid recipient
Four years has passed since the Taliban claimed control of Afghanistan and the situation in the country is not improving.
Nearly 90% of the population is facing hunger, with half the population, 23 million people, requiring food aid.
Meanwhile, 40% of Afghanistan's international assistance has been cut resulting in millions of people's needs being unmet.
Additionally, nearly 2 million refugees have been returned to Afghanistan this summer, exacerbating the need.
In August, AAFF was able to provide 140 families with a month's worth of staple food supplies.
Many of the recipients are women-led households. Afghan women are restricted from many aspects of society, including working in most sectors. Because of this, women-led households often struggle to provide for the basic needs of their families.
The opening quote is from a woman who received food aid. After receiving aid she said, "This food aid has helped us manage physically for a while and brought much needed relief."
As winter approaches, needs intensify as people not only struggle with hunger but also struggle to stay warm as they lack resources to adequately heat their homes, making people more vulnerable to illness. Because of the increased need, we are hoping to provide another distribution this winter.
