Over the past three to four months, the Education Team has been deeply involved in various initiatives and efforts, all carefully planned to support the academic progress, personal growth, and prospects of the students we serve. Our dedication to their success has remained strong, leading us to take on various activities including monitoring and evaluation, proposal development, student support, curriculum implementation, university exploration, and guidance provision.

Individual student support has been a focal point of our activities, as we sought to address specific challenges and barriers to success. Instances of irregular attendance and academic underperformance prompted targeted interventions, including the signing of contracts delineating expectations and consequences.

Parallel to our individualised support initiatives, we embarked on broader curriculum development, endeavours aimed at enhancing student well-being and academic excellence. Our collaboration with HHUK resulted in the launch of a Pastoral Care Curriculum, tailored to meet the unique needs of our students and provide them with holistic support beyond the confines of the academic realm. This ongoing collaboration underscores our commitment to nurturing not just academic success but also personal growth and resilience.

The education team organised a farewell program for our students who have completed their Class 12 examinations. We invited our CEO, Dr. Sakie Zawtha, along with HHM staff, to join the programme.

During the programme, we took a moment to reflect on how important education and support from our community can be in helping young people transform their lives for the better. It was a meaningful reminder of the impact we can have when we come together to support one another.

The education team has also assisted students in applying for passports in Myanmar for further studies. Additionally, the team is actively searching for colleges and universities for Class 12 students. This involves identifying suitable institutions that align with the student's academic interests and future goals, as well as providing guidance throughout the application process.

Looking ahead, our commitment remains steadfast as we continue to support students in their academic endeavours, facilitate their transition to higher education institutions, and empower them to realise their full potential.

Freedom to Education report January 2024

The Freedom to Education Project aims to identify and support talented young men and women from Myanmar who carry a vision for the long-term benefit of their people and provide them with the opportunity to pursue higher education.

Through your support, we have been supporting students to pursue college and higher education opportunities since 2009 and we have now seen over 130 young people graduate either from higher secondary school or university.

According to recent reports (December 2023), approximately one third of school-age children in Myanmar are not enrolled in any form of learning, and conflict, displacement, and economic hardships have severely disrupted education over the past three years with potential life-long detrimental impact.

The Freedom to Education Project is a long-term priority, recognising the risks to young people in Myanmar, and the long-term need for educated young people who will go on to serve their communities. This vital project provides a route for further study, even for a few. One student recently commented that she feels as though she is carrying the dreams of 1,000 of her peers by being able to study at this level.

Currently we have 21 students studying at Year 12 level who will be aiming to graduate this coming year, paving the way for application to university level courses.

We saw 17 students start university courses in 2023 with partial scholarships from Health & Hope, adding to the six who are currently part way through their studies. They are studying a wide range of courses from nursing to engineering to business.

We heard recently that our student studying at Masters level came top at the end of her first year. Many congratulations to her after so much hard work!

Freedom to Education Students continue to Excel

Health & Hope’s Freedom to Education Project has been supporting students to pursue college and higher education opportunities since 2009 and thanks to your generosity, we have now seen over 130 young people graduate either from higher secondary school or university.

With the crisis continuing in Myanmar following the military coup more than two years ago and the collapse of the education system, young people especially are at high risk of being drafted into militia groups. This vital project however provides a route away from this, even for a few.

The Freedom to Education Project is a long-term priority, recognising the risks to young people in Myanmar, and the long-term need for educated young people who will go on to serve their communities.

In June we were very pleased to learn that 18 out of 19 students passed their Year 12 exams. Given the extraordinary challenges these young people faced when starting in Year 11, this is an achievement to celebrate!

The Freedom to Education team has been actively engaged in various tasks, including student admissions, and providing guidance to Class 12 students in their daily activities.

Three students are enrolled on Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) and Electrical Engineering courses at university.

Remarkably, all 17 of our students have achieved admission to their desired universities and colleges. Notably, 10 students have been accepted into prestigious academic institutions. This achievement is truly remarkable, considering the challenges our students faced and the fact that admissions were secured even after the closing date.

Class 12 Science students faced a challenge when their Physics teacher resigned from the job. To address this issue, our team embarked on a search for a qualified Physics teacher who has now been hired as a private tutor and is now providing regular tuition for the students.
