Summary

ViaNinos UK will support the tutoring programme at CENIT by financing the salary of a local teacher. CENIT runs a tutoring programme at the centre and also at the markets in the poorest sectors of Ecuador's capital city, Quito. Volunteers and teachers support children who are struggling at school to help improve academic performance, build confidence and prevent school desertion. The programme also offers recreational activities, a safe social space, and a hot lunch and/or healthy snack.

Challenge

Child labour is one of the consequences of poverty in Ecuador. Many poor, including many indigenous, people move to the city in search of a better life. When they arrive they face a very different social and economic reality and children end up having to work instead of focussing on their schooling. They work long hours in dangerous environments and as a result are more likely to fall behind at school and drop out. These children are also at risk of abuse.

Solution

Volunteers and teachers support working children and invite them to join the tutoring programme where they can get help with their homework and extra help with any areas of their school work where they might be struggling. Learning difficulties, behavioural issues as well as health, social or family problems may come to light and staff can get help for the children. They also get to have fun and learn together in a safe environment and have access to CENIT's canteen to get a hot lunch.

Long-Term Impact

The tutoring programme supports children at risk of school desertion and offers extra support to help them succeed at school. In the long-term, through access to education and training, young people will be better placed to make good choices, secure employment, break the poverty cycle and lead a life of dignity.
