Summary

The residents of Domingo Maiz worry every day about where their water comes from and whether or not it is safe to drink and use. Fuentes de Vida seeks to create a community water treatment plant and provide clean drinking water for the residents of Domingo Maiz, transforming the lives and living conditions of over 150 families in need. Fuentes de Vida is building a constructed wetland, a natural system that treats the community's sewage and insures that local aquifers are clean for drinking.

Challenge

Domingo Maiz is a small community of tourism workers located just outside the tourist destination of Punta Cana. The community lacks any type of sewage treatment and has unsafe drinking water sources. Domingo Maiz's water comes from wells contaminated by untreated sewage from the community. Fuentes de Vida helps the community's health, its ability to work, and the safety of many children. Fuentes de Vida has drastically improved the health and potable water access of the community's 150 families

Solution

The Fuentes de Vida project has built a constructed wetland sewage treatment system that will clean the communities' waste water and improve drinking water quality in the community wells. This project will provide expertise, resources and training to empower the 150 families (500 people) in Domingo Maiz to become agents of change and improve their community's sanitation needs. Community members will also receive training in basic hygiene practices and proper use and maintenance of the system.

Long-Term Impact

The constructed wetland water treatment system will provide clean water for Domingo Maiz, making it an example community within the Punta Cana region, improving living and health conditions of its residents, preventing risks to small children, and creating a viable long-term solution to a significant environmental problem. The project will provide a community-based solution to water sanitation for other communities in the Punta Cana region and the Dominican Republic.
