At FAHM training, midwives gathered to deepen their skills in caring for survivors of gender-based violence. When asked how they would carry this knowledge forward, one response stayed with us.
Midwife Altamise reflected on what the experience meant to her—not only as a provider, but as a woman rooted in her community.
“This training has strengthened me both personally and professionally,” she shared. “I’ve gained skills in counseling, conducting physical exams, understanding medical-legal responsibilities, and connecting survivors to local resources.”
But for Altamise, the impact goes beyond clinical practice.
“I will bring this knowledge back to my community—helping women and families understand what abuse is, whether verbal, physical, or within intimate relationships. I will help them know their rights, and where to turn for support in cases of sexual violence.”
Through midwives like Altamise, knowledge does not stay in that learning space—it reaches homes, conversations, and communities, helping to break silence and build pathways to care.
