“I feel more confident in speaking out”- Kalpana*.
At first, Kalpana stood as a slight, self conscious girl in the training with our partners, lacking the confidence to speak up about her painful background or the effects that her disabilities have had on her confidence. Kalpana comes from a challenging background in Amravati where her family have had problems with addiction and she has lost a parent to suicide. In an environment where ‘Eve teasing’ - sexual harassment- is commonplace within school and where girls often try to keep themselves safe by dropping out of school early, Kalpana was at risk of leaving education or falling under the radar.
However, in workshops led by our partners, Kalpana was given a safe environment with other children in which to practice speaking up about abuse and being taught about consent. This training has had a big effect on Kalpana. She’s now involved in school with enthusiasm and confidence, speaking more confidently with her friends and learning to voice her views.
Your support has helped Kalpana and other children to find their voices, learn about their rights to safety and boundaries and helped break the cycle of abuse endemic in parts of society. Thank you!
