Help after the Earthquake in Southeast Asia

By German Red Cross | Corporate Partnerships

Overview

On March 28, 2025, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 struck several countries in Southeast Asia, with Myanmar being particularly affected. The epicenter was located in the Sagaing and Mandalay regions. The tremors resulted in thousands of fatalities and injuries. Infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings—including numerous healthcare facilities—suffered extensive damage. Many areas are experiencing disruptions in electricity and water supply.

One month after the devastating earthquake, the situation in Myanmar remains dire. Over 1.3 million people have been affected. Access to some of the impacted areas remains difficult—particularly in regions where conflicts continue. Many people are living under extreme conditions in tents, makeshift shelters, or even completely unprotected in the open. Daytime temperatures are reaching up to 44 degrees Celsius (111°F).

Humanitarian needs

With the water supply infrastructure destroyed, there is a growing threat of waterborne diseases such as cholera and diarrheal illnesses, which can be life-threatening. In addition, many people have lost their livelihoods—small businesses, market stalls, and farms have been destroyed. Without an income, they are struggling to afford food and essential goods.

People in Myanmar continue to require emergency shelters, clean drinking water, sanitation facilities, and medical care. Many families have no access to cooking facilities and rely on food donations. Psychosocial support is also urgently needed, as many are traumatized and live in constant fear of aftershocks. Having lost their livelihoods, many people will depend on humanitarian assistance for an extended period.

With the approaching monsoon season, the need for stable shelters and preventative measures against flooding is growing.

Relief Shipment to Myanmar

On April 9, 2025, the German Red Cross (GRC) dispatched 42 tons of humanitarian aid to Myanmar. The relief shipment, part of an EU air bridge, was organized in close cooperation with the Belgian Red Cross – Flanders. It includes 250 family tents, 700 toolkits for reconstruction, 1,000 tarpaulins, 2,000 sleeping mats, 2,000 thermal blankets, 1,000 buckets, 1,000 hygiene kits, and 2,000 jerry cans.

On the ground, the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS), in coordination with the GRC team on site, is responsible for distributing the aid items to help alleviate the difficult situation faced by people in the affected regions.

In the coming months, the focus will be on food security, water supply, and livelihood support.
