6 year old Meherman has MIVS surgery
By Fauzia Aziz | Manager resource developement
Meherman, 6 year old girl from Nushki village near Quetta, had been facing eye issues since she was 4 years old. Youngest of the 4 siblings she was the most pampered and apple of her parent’s eyes. Her father Karam being a daily wage earner and the only bread winner for a family of 7 members was very concerned for his daughter’s eye ailment but could not gather enough funds to take her to a specialized facility.
Random hakeem’s, neighborhood doctors and their prescribed medications resulted in exhausting their meagre saving as well as the loan they took. Seeing his daughter’s pain, grievance and deteriorating condition Karam was in an extremely distressed situation. He felt helpless for not being able to treat his daughter and considered himself a failure as a father. He was on the verge of nervous breakdown when his and his family’s prayers were answered. His uncle visiting from Quetta seeing Meherman’s condition offered to take them along and get Meherman treated at LRBT Quetta.
Upon hearing the good news, the poor mother’s face started gleaming with happiness. Meherman had almost lost her vision from right eye due to retinal issue. After the initial examination the doctor referred her to be taken to LRBT Karachi or LRBT Lahore Secondary hospitals which specialized in retinal issues . Her parents sold the only asset they had ; the wedding gold ornaments of Meherman’s mother so they could travel to Karachi. After complete examination at LRBT Korangi the doctor diagnosed her with endophthalmitis. Seeing their financial condition they were allowed to stay at the hospital for free.
She was operated with an MIVS (Micro incision vitrectomy surgery) to save her eye from pain and other complications such as glaucoma. Her eye would have started to shrink too and been disfigured had she not been treated in a timely manner. Today Meherman is treated, her eye has been saved and has gone back to her home. Her father had tears in his eyes while leaving LRBT for waving off the burden of staying in an expensive city like Karachi and facilitating in every way as LRBT could and most importantly for treating his daughter for free.

Born with cataract - 2 year old Fiza!
By Fauzia Aziz | Manager resource developement
2 year old Fiza was born with cataract in both eyes. Her father Akber had been the happiest man on earth when he heard that his wife was expecting - Fiza is their only child and was born after 10 years of marriage.
When the doctor informed the parents that Fiza was born with cataract and would be unable to see they were devastated. They took her to the best clinics that they could afford but everyone said the same thing that she was too young to be operated upon and they would need to wait. Akber is a plumber by profession and earns a meager salary of Rs. 10,000 a month with which he pays rent and supports his elderly parents who live with him.
He knew that they would need money for Fiza’s operation but he was unable to save anything, his worst fear was they would not be able to afford her treatment. It was sheer luck that a relative told them about LRBT Korangi and advised them to take Fiza for a checkup. By this time Fiza was 2 years old, upon reaching the hospital Fiza was examined in the paedriatic department and the doctor said that her eye can be operated upon.
Akber was hesitant in asking the cost of the surgery but summoned up the courage, he was told that treatment at LRBT is free for those who cannot afford it. He was relieved beyond words and brought Fiza on the designated day for surgery, she had a successful operation in one eye and would be returning soon for the other eye's surgery. Her joy when the bandage came off and she saw her mother for the first time was a sight to see.
Upon leaving the hospital Akber profusely thanked the doctors and staff and said that LRBT was an answer to their prayers and a beacon of hope for the poor.

Rubeena's tragic ordeal is over..
By Fauzia Aziz | Manager Resource Development
6 years old, Rubeena hailing from Chamman in Quetta was playing with friends when an incident caused her to go blind in one eye. Hailing from a small town, there was a dearth of good medical facilities and her poor distraught mother rushed her to the nearest clinic. The doctor gave her an ice pack and prescribed some eye drops. Over time Rubeena started to complain of blurred vision. Her parents already poor and having no means to get her treated were devastated thinking that their daughter’s life would be destroyed with a disfigured eye. She would lose her sight and also all prospects of getting married.
In the town where Rubeena’s family lived, opportunities for women were limited to the extent of taking care of the house and getting married and looking after children. Education was nonexistent with most of the people working in the fields.
Rubeena’s mother prayed for a miracle daily – Rubeena’s uncle who worked in a factory in Karachi knew about LRBT Korangi and advised her parents to bring her to Karachi for treatment. He had heard that treatment was free but was not sure if the surgery would be too.
Rubeena went to LRBT for a checkup and was diagnosed with traumatic cataract and retinal issue in her injured left eye. The doctors said that they would need to operate immediately to save her eye from further damage. They assured her parents that Rubeena’s treatment would be free of cost. Rubeena had her cataract and MIVS surgery. Both the surgeries were successful and Rubeena is able to see once again.
Her parents were in tears when the doctors told them that their daughter’s eye will completely heal. They thanked LRBT and its kind donors who enable the underprivileged to lead fulfilling lives once again.
