Girl Power, helping girls recover from abuse

Here are a couple of stories highlighting our work, 

Sanwi (20 days)  
 
In a town, some 30Km away from the centre a 20-day old baby was thrown away near a riverbank. Found fortuitously by a member of the public she informed the local police who brought her to Rescue Junction for care and protection. 
 
 Per the norms and laws this little girl will be offered for adoption. (By an Indian family).   
 
Soni Kumari (14)  
 
Soni has had a difficult life. When her mother died when she was young, her father remarried only to constantly fight with his new wife and eventually she committed suicide by drinking poison. Soni went to live with her grandmother could not afford to keep her so she ended up with her aunty in anther village. Throughout all this she managed to educate herself up to class seven. She became friendly with a local boy and together they ran away to seek a better life together and were removed from a running train by the government railway police. Rescue Junction staff are working with her to decide the best option for her welfare and wellbeing.  

We have changed the names and removed any information which might identify the children involved.

My name is Naresh sir and I am Director of Education here at People Frst and I thouht you might like to hear about our programs for girls .

As ever we thank you for your support, our work with rescued and girls in urgent need and distress continues but I though you might like to hear about our  girls programme which many of our girls at Rescue Junction go into in addition to the special programme at Rescue Junction.

In Bihar according to official figures...

95% of women have less than 12 years of education
54% of women do not participate in any decision-making on their own health, mobility and well-being
57% of adults ages 15-49 believe it is justifiable for a husband to beat his wife
82% of rural women ages 20-24 were married before age 18
68% of women had their first pregnancy before age 18

Our programme for girls empowers marginalized adolescent girls in Bihar with knowledge, skills and support to improve their personal resilience and physical health, and to self-advocate for their right to stay in school and delay marriage.

People First girls programme students are 10–18-year-old girls living in rural poverty and those that have been referred or are resident at Rescue Junction. The typical attendee in the rural areas is the first generation in her family to attend school; is at high risk for trafficking, and will have few, if any, positive employment prospects beyond menial or household labour. Most are at risk for marriage at 14-16 years of age.

The Trust provides a holistic empowerment program, combining personal resilience training with curriculum in adolescent health. The 6-month program provides in-depth training in:

• character strength development
• social-emotional and communication skills
• problem-solving and conflict resolution
• nutrition, reproductive and sexual health, safe water, HIV/AIDS, malaria prevention and similar

Girls learn to advocate for their rights, set goals, and make positive decisions that can help them to improve their circumstances and realize their dreams.
